Flu season has begun, and will run until May, according to the Pima County Health Department. Now, they are recommending people in the community get their flu shots to protect themselves, but also those around them.
"The reason to get a flu shot is because around us there are people who are really vulnerable who could get really sick," Pima County Health Department Director and Chief Medical Officer said. "Babies, pregnant women, and older folks, as well as folks who are immuno-suppressed."
Dr. Garcia explained that the flu shot is generally more effective than the flu mist. However, he believes that in some cases, the flu mist is an acceptable alternative.
"Because it's highly effective," he said, in reference to the shot. "There's a high degree of match between what is anticipated to be the flu strain, and what is in the current vaccination formulation."
Many pharmacies around town offer the flu shot and mist. The health director said mini-clinics and doctors offices are other places to get it done as well.
