Fire Prevention Week: How to be fire safe

and last updated

This week, the Tucson Fire Department is reminding Tucsonans about the importance of fire safety. It's part of "Fire Prevention Week."

This year's theme is  "Every second counts, plan two ways out!."

TFD's Public Information Officer Captain Andy Skaggs says it's an opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of installing working smoke alarms and a creating a fire escape plan and practice exit drills in the home.

TFD kicked off "fire prevention week" over the weekend, by installing free smoke alarms at local homes.

According to Captain Skaggs, in a typical house fire, people who live there may have less than three minutes to escape. To prepare for a fire, everyone must have an escape plan and a working smoke alarm, he added.

The presence of a working smoke alarm reduces the risk of dying in a fire by half because it gives you time to put your plan into action, "Every second count, plan two ways out!"
