TUCSON, Ariz. — For the first time, Desert Rose Academy is hosting a chess tournament for all the Rose Academies.
Students took to the game of chess one day when two teachers were playing in a friendly match. Since that day, students spent every lunch break playing, so they created a chess club.
Assistant Principal of Desert Rose Academy Rick Ellis said he was surprised by how many students were interested in the game, but excited to see the turn out.
He said the club has one third of the school participating and raised attendance by 30%.
All five Rose Academies will be participating in the tournament Friday starting at 9 a.m.
