A crash on Gates Pass means the road that runs through it will be closed from Kinney Road to Camino de Oeste, according to the Pima County Sheriff's Department
According to Drexel Heights Fire District, a single vehicle crashed 300 feet down a cliff and into the desert.
Fire crews extricated the driver and "prepared the patient for a topside rescue to the roadway."
The Pima County Technical Rescue Team was initially activated, but later canceled after on-scene crews completed the rescue without additional assistance.
The driver is in critical condition at Banner University Medical Center - Main Campus.
Commuters are asked to find an alternate route.
