Crack down on drivers disobeying school zones

The kids are officially back in school and Tucson Police Department making sure drivers are obeying the law in school zones.  

Speeding and not paying attention are the major concerns that affect children heading back to school. 

"People aren't slowing down and they're trying to get to the crosswalk too fast and not paying attention," says Tammy Dayton, crossing guard in Vail. 

Police and Vail school officials are cracking down on offenders in Vail and they're handing out hefty tickets. 

"Looking for violations speeding and passing in the school zone and failure to yield to children," says David Brotherton with the Tucson Police Department. 

In school zones, fines are doubles and the pedal to the metal can cost up to $675 is caught breaking the law. 

Passing vehicles in school zones will also get you a citation. 

If you're driving by a crosswalk during school hours and kids are walking across - make sure to stop and wait until everyone is off the street.
