UPDATE (1:17 p.m., April 17):

Tucson Police provided more details on a crash that killed a pedestrian and a driver Wednesday morning.

According to a news release, 71-year-old James Alexander Yates was driving his Volkswagen Passat east on Broadway, above the speed limit, when he failed to maintain his lane at the Wilmot Road intersection and clipped the front of a stopped northbound vehicle before leaving the roadway.

From there, Yates allegedly struck 34-year-old Richard Paul Edis, Jr., who was sitting near the southeast corner of the intersection, the news release said.

Yates continued east, driving over a landscaped area and entering a nearby parking lot, where he hit a tree.

Edis was pronounced dead at the scene. Yates was transported to the hospital where he died from his injuries several hours later. Yates was not wearing his seatbelt, TPD said.

UPDATE (3:53 p.m.): The intersection has reopened.
