TUCSON, Ariz. - Reid Park Zoo has an expecting mother.
Semba the elephant is pregnant, and her calf is due March or April, a zoo spokesperson said.
The gestation period for elephants ranges between 22 and 24 months.
A team of volunteers is observing Semba 24 hours a day. Semba is undergoing a regular battery of physical exams, blood work and ultrasounds.
When the calf arrives, it will probably have a bent tail and ears that straighten out eventually.
#TBT to 2014 when African elephant Nandi was about two months old and 435 pounds! Like all baby elephants, Nandi's new little brother or sister due this spring will be born at around 250 pounds. The entire Zoo is excited to have a "little" elephant roaming the habitat again soon! pic.twitter.com/dr5RkRADGI
