A mother and her boyfriend have been arrested on child abuse charges after the mother's child died on May 14.
On May 11 just after 3:30 p.m., Tucson Fire responded to a report of an unresponsive child inside an apartment at 2800 S. Mission Road.
Paramedics transported the 9-month-old to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The mother and her boyfriend responded to the hospital as well.
Officers learned that the baby has rolled off the couch and hit the carpeted floor when he became unresponsive, according to police.
Doctors advised the child had significant new and old injuries that were not consistent with falling off a couch.
Detectives continued the investigation and determined the child had new and old injuries consistent with abusive head trauma.
The mother has been identified as 25-year-old Salma Rodriguez. Rodriguez was arrested for two counts of child abuse.
The mother's boyfriend, 22-year-old Ivan Portillo Herrera was arrested for one count of child abuse.
They were both transported and booked into the Pima County Jail.
The baby died from his injuries on May 14.
