The American Red Cross is issuing an emergency call for blood and platelet donors, due to a severe winter blood shortage.
The Red Cross reported receiving 37,000 fewer donations in November and December, siting hectic holiday schedules and severe weather as a major impact of the shortage. Nearly 100 blood drives were forced to cancel their drives, resulting in 3,100 uncollected donations.
Communications Director of Red Cross Blood Services, Nick Gehring, says, "Right now blood and platelet donations are being distributed to hospitals faster than they are coming in." He encourages people to donate so patients can continue to receive lifesaving treatments they are counting on.
To schedule an appointment to donate, visitredcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767). Completion of RapidPass, an online health questionnaire is encouraged to help speed up the donation process.
