PHOENIX (AP) - The Phoenix Elementary School District is considering closing three of its 14 campuses at the end of the academic year.

The Arizona Republic reports the proposed closures of Emerson and Dunbar schools as well as Faith North preschool are part of a consolidation plan presented Tuesday to teachers at the three campuses.

The newspaper says a merger proposal includes public hearings at a date yet to be determined and a final school board vote in February.

District numbers show Emerson's enrollment has declined by 20% over five years with Phoenix Elementary down 17% and Dunbar 13%.

Data from the Arizona Department of Education show that about 400 students attend Emerson, about 300 attend Dunbar and 102 attend Faith North.

If the three schools were closed, students would be moved from Emerson to Whittier Elementary, Dunbar to Bethune Elementary and Faith North to other campuses that have preschool programs.
