14-year-old Marana High School student struck, killed while running across Interstate 10

Marana High School administration issued a statement on Sunday, Sept. 10, pertaining to the girl's death.

The statement noted that one of the school's ninth-grade students passed away unexpectedly.

"We send our sincere condolences to family and friends during this difficult time," the statement read.

Marana High School had a District Crisis Team on-site on Monday for counseling, according to the statement.

"The student will be greatly missed on our campus," the statement read. "Thank you for your support during this time."

A 14-year-old Marana High School student was struck and killed while running across Interstate 10 on Friday, Sept. 8, according to local law enforcement officials.

The girl was running across the eastbound lanes of the interstate near the Marana exit at milepost 236, at about 2:26 a.m., when she was struck by a passenger vehicle in one lane, and struck again by a commercial vehicle in the next lane over, according to DPS.

She was declared dead at the scene, according to DPS.

Marana Police Department, which assisted on the frontage road to reroute traffic, confirmed that the girl was 14 years old and that she attended Marana High School.

The victim's name has not been released.
