TUCSON, Ariz. — All deputies with the Pima County Sheriff's Department will soon carry a lifesaving drug wherever they go.

Narcan is a nasal spray version of the drug naloxone, which can be used to revive those overdosing on opioids. The PCSD says their deputies will carry it in their first aid kits starting this year.

The Arizona Department of Health is providing the drugs to the PCSD at no cost, deputies say.

"While this is not a substitute for emergency medical care, the Sheriff’s Department is making Narcan available to our deputies as a potential life-saving tool," the PCSD said in a statement.

Just last month, officers with the Tucson Police Department saved several people from overdosing in one night. TPD Chief Chris Magnus urged other local law enforcement agencies to carry Narcan in a news conference when discussing the incident.
