About Allen
Allen Kath began his career at 14-years-old with a small daytime-only radio station in western Nebraska. Making every mistake a broadcaster could make before turning 18, He migrated to Phoenix and attended DeVry Institute of Technology on a full scholarship, graduating in 1982 with a B.S. in Electronics Engineering Technology.
In 1980, a former sister station of KGUN- called KTAR- asked Allen to do evening traffic reports in addition to his general reporting duties. At that time, traffic reporting was very new and known primarily in areas including Baltimore, New York, Los Angeles, and Houston. Allen recalls that the job of traffic reporter was so unique that very few radio reporters wanted to try it.
Allen eventually went to work for Skyview Traffic Watch without a salary but was promised a future expansion into Tucson. Allen and his wife, a pilot and a part-time salesperson, eventually moved here to begin a Tucson-based airborne traffic reporting company in 1988.
Allen continued with that company for 19 years until this year when he landed at KGUN’s parent company, Journal Broadcast Group.
“Big Al” is also heard on KGUN’s sister radio stations providing morning reports to the Bobby Rich Morning MIX on 94.9 MIX FM and on 104.1, The Truth. Working both the radio and TV side is a unique opportunity and he enjoys it.
Allen enjoys spending time with his wife and four children, all of whom are smarter than him. Just ask them. They’ll tell you.
