TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - A Tucson Unified School District bus caught fire this afternoon in midtown.
TUSD spokeswoman Stefanie Boe said no children were on the bus at the time of the fire. The bus was on it's way to pick up kids at Whitmore Elementary, she said.
The driver saw smoke coming from the control panel and called authorities, said Boe. He was able to get off the bus before it caught fire.
Tucson Fire Capt. Barrett Baker said one engine responded to the bus fire at 2:30 p.m.
Tucson Fire and TUSD investigators will be investigating the cause of the fire.
Tucson Unified said TUSD mechanics will be working overtime during the weekend to inspect a line of school buses following the fire today.
When a TUSD buscaught fire in February 2015, it launched an investigation within the school district, putting many buses out of service. No children were on the bus at the time.
