A Pima County deputy has lost an eye after being kicked during the arrest of a DUI suspect.
On December 10, deputies were conducting a DUI investigation in the area of East Drexel Road and South Alvernon Way.
Deputies arrested a 28-year-old Yesennia Gonzalez for allegedly driving under the influence, said Deputy Cody Gress with PCSD.
While deputies were placing Gonzalez into the patrol car, she became physically resistant and deliberately began kicking.
Gonzalez kicked Sergeant Mark Bustamante in his left eye with the heel of her boot, said Gress. Her kicking caused a severe injury to his eye, requiring him to be transported to the hospital.
Doctors operated on Sgt. Bustamante’s left eye, but were not able to save it.
Gonzalez also kicked another traffic deputy who was on the scene, said Gress.
Gonzalez has been booked for two counts of Aggravated Assault on a Police Officer, one count of Resisting Arrest, and one count of DUI.
A GoFundMe page has been set up for Sergeant Bustamante if you would like to make a donation.
