TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - The city of Tucson is looking for help beautifying their streets. The Tucson Mural Program is working to recruit artists from around the state to paint up to 10 walls in the downtown area. Officials hope the project will help enrich downtown Tucson while deterring potential graffiti.
Dozens of painted murals currently line the streets of 4th Avenue and downtown Tucson. The works of art display diversity and creativity by some of the best artists in the city.
Now, the Tucson Mural Program is working to add even more artwork to the city walls. Earlier this month, the city launched a similar project painting dumpsters around town. But now, the artists get a bigger canvas.
City officials are accepting applications for up to 10 individual artists or groups to continue the beautification project at highly prominent areas around downtown. Using grant money, the program is able to provide up to $8,000 for each mural to pay for paint and other materials.
Artists can submit their applications to the city by March 6th. Paint it set to hit begin hitting the walls by the end of April. The project is planned to be completed June 3rd.
