Back to school apps every parent needs

Posted

As your students get back to school, are you ready to keep up with their teacher and what they're doing in class?

One popular app that's free and now widely used in schools across Tucson is Class Dojo. It allows parents to see what their student is up to in real time.

Parents can see videos and photos from class each day. Teachers can also instant message parents about their student. You can use it on your phone and your computer, so checking in while at work or on the go is easy to do.

"It's just instant communication with your classroom teacher," said Andrea Lithgow, a teacher at La Paloma Academy who uses Class Dojo. "So, they're participating in class, and then that parent at home will get somewhat of a text message saying, "Oh this is what they're doing. They showed kindness today. They got a Dojo point for that," said Lithgow.

Students can also post to the app to show off art or writing projects. If you'd like to get involved, ask your teacher if he or she uses Class Dojo.

Another popular communication service is Parent Teacher Group or PTG. Many schools use this e-mail and text service to send reminders to parents. Ask your school about subscribing.

Other free apps you may want to consider throughout the year:

  • Duo Lingo: If your child is struggling learning a foreign language, this app offers quick daily lessons in dozens of languages.
  • Art Kive: A paperless and clutter-free way to preserve your children's art projects they create at school.
