A woman thought to be in her 70s to 80s has dead following a fire that occurred at Venture Out, a 55+ retirement community, according to Mesa Fire Department officials.
Mesa fire officials say they responded to a trailer fire near Val Vista Drive and East Main Street shortly before 5 a.m. The home belonged to a couple in their 70s to 80s.
When fire crews arrived, they say the single-wide trailer home was fully engulfed, along with a car parked in the street.
Though fire units feared the blaze would spread to neighboring homes, they were able to keep it from spreading.
According to fire officials, they were able to enter the home when the majority of the fire was knocked down. Once inside, they located a woman reported to be in her 70s to 80s who perished in the fire.
The woman's partner, a man in his 70s to 80s, was able to escape the home. He was treated by medical responders and transported to the Maricopa Integrated Burn Center.
He is being treated for smoke inhalation and possible burns, and was listed stable condition when we was transported, according to Mesa fire officials.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. Preliminary reports suggest the couple's smoke alarm was working prior to the fire.
