While journalism is at the forefront, KGUN 9 and KWBA provide Tucson-Sierra Vista residents with 10 over-the-air entertainment channels including KGUN 9 ABC and KWBA-Arizona 58. These channels range from Grit-old western shows; Laff-comedies; Court TV; ION which airs dramas and Friday night professional women’s basketball games and other sports programming; to Scripps News.
KGUN 9’s first telecast was June 3, 1956, it was previously known as KDWI, owned by D.W. “Doc” Ingram, a Tucson lumber business owner. Less than a year after the station started broadcasting, the station was sold to a Texas oilman who changed the call letters from KDWI to KGUN who had a love of collecting guns and western movies that were filmed in the area. The change in ownership also brought along a popular show in the late ‘50’s and early 60’s called, “Marshall KGUN.” A side note, Grit a television channel owned by The E.W. Scripps Company, KGUN 9’s parent company features old western shows. In fact, more than dozen programs televised on Grit were produced and filmed in surrounding Tucson film studios. In 2015, The E.W. Scripps Company purchased KGUN 9 and KWBA.
